Topic of Conversation

For the group project, our topic is " Infidelity on the Internet" and the book we selected is : Infidelity on the Internet: Virtual Relationships and Real Betrayal by Marlene M. Maheu, Rona Subotnik

SST Conference on 11/20/09

This was my first time attending the South Sound Technology Conference ( SST ) , The best part was lunch of course ( catered box lunches), listening to the guest speakers /panels especially Richard Purcell . I was fascinated with the example he did putting in some one's phone number on google and then the name showed up of the person along with an image of the location in the Maps section, and his example about telling a cashier your phone number at the store and the person behind you can use it to find out your name, where you live and all sorts of information about you like those 2 websites we saw in class ( peekyou.com and 123 people.com) that's very scary.

The conference was well overall, I just think that there should be more "hands on activities" next time, like working with some of the different types of technologies. I'm interested to hear more about the seminar in April 2010.

Scavenger Hunt Activity

In Class Last Wednesday, we working in groups to do a scavenger hunt worksheet. It was a lot of fun looking for stuff on the Internet, but at the same time you had to look for things , that you either never heard of before or just didn't seem to be what you were looking for. My group was determined on finding a certain question, but we were unable to find it sometimes. The scary part of looking for one of the questions, was looking for the definition of " sock poppet" so I went to google and the first results was from Wikipedia then the other was a website, urban dictionary.com and there was another definition as well as a whole bunch of other things that were somehow related to socks, showed up to the left side of the site, some inappropriate, so you have to be careful what you type in on certain sites, it goes to show how powerful those search engines are.

Convergence?

What is the meaning of convergence in a technological term? The definition I looked up first had nothing to do with what we were discussing in class last Monday.

So I put in some other terms on Google; I put in " convergence in technology, some definitions came up
and then I went to dictionary.com that had a definition for convergent technologies Operating System. This was what it said " A modular, message-passing, multi-process based operating system.
Convergent Technologies' first product was the IWS (I
ntegrated Workstation) based on the
Intel 8086, which had CTOS as its operating system. It is a modular operating system with built in local area networking.

I'm a still bit confused about what really the whole system is; I hope to learn more when we discuss the topic again.

Online Documentation vs Physical Documentation

The difference between online documentation and physical ( hard copy) documentation is that the online documentation is updated regularly ( sometimes) and the physical documentation, sometimes it not updated at all, depending on the year.

Another thing about online documentation, can be that not all of the information will be accurate, compared to a hard copy documentation ( book, encyclopedia, etc) can have accurate facts, and online can be anyone putting in false information; for example Wikipedia online , you get all sort of information on that website, and you don't know what to believe and what not to believe sometimes.

Vanity Search & Other Searches.....

When I enter my name in Google, a lot of information is revealed about me, I was surprised to find out that my old and new address shows up on http://www.123people.com, phone number and everything, now that's scary, other information shows up. Every time I search my name under images, La Toya Jackson (celebrity) appears, it happens all the time. It's amazing how much information is out there about you online.
